Likely cause

An exposed or poorly insulated pipe run (often in an exterior wall, crawlspace, or garage) freezing solid.

What to try first

• Open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm room air reach the pipes.
• Leave affected faucets slightly open (a slow drip) — moving water is far less likely to freeze solid.
• Never use an open flame to thaw a pipe — use a hair dryer or heating pad and stop immediately if you smell gas or see a burst.
